I have long experience in research on adverse effects of environmental pollutants, for several years focusing on metabolism and classical experimental toxicology. In recent years, my research has increasingly concerned human health effects, often integrated into large epidemiological studies, with international collaboration. Main focus has been on common food and water contaminants such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury and, recently manganese. In particular, I have studied effects and associated mechanisms in susceptible groups, e.g. women, fetuses, and children, and included risk factors such as metabolism, gene-environment interactions, and nutrition. The aim is to develop this further by broaden the scientific collaboration more to nutrition and molecular biology and to use novel methodology.

My research has been increasingly successful with most publications in highly reputed scientific journals. In total, I have 220 peer-reviewed scientific articles; 70 since 2005. About 40% of the publications have impact factors >4 (average in 2009 was 4.3), which is very high for our research area (median 1.6 for Public Health and 2.1 for Toxicology). According to the bibliometrics at KI, 26% of my articles were among the 5% most cited in the field. My h-index (Web of Science) is 45.

All since the start of my research activities, I have been involved in health risk assessment of environmental pollutants, especially metals. I have participated in several IPCS EHC documents, and risk assessment committees within European Commission and US National Academy of Sciences. Regularly, I have participated in risk assessment activities at a national level, mainly for the Ministry of the Environment, the Environment Protection Agency, the Swedish Chemicals Agency, and the Board of Health and Welfare.
